Ramón Traverse | Framed Print

Captured by Santiago Canales in September 2018, this photograph documents a three-day traverse across the Sierra de Ramón, the mountain range that rises directly above Santiago and forms the eastern horizon of the city.

The route follows the crestline from Cerro Provincia to Cerro de Ramón, linking several summits along the way. To one side, Santiago stretches across the valley toward the Coastal Range. To the other, the high Andes rise beyond 5,000 meters, with some peaks exceeding 6,000 meters in elevation.

Despite its proximity to a city of millions, the traverse feels remarkably remote. For many local mountaineers, the Sierra de Ramón is a rare luxury—an alpine landscape that begins almost at the edge of home, a place often described as walking through the city's own backyard.

The group consisted of three hikers. As the traverse progressed, the photographer naturally fell behind the other two. Rather than rushing to close the gap, he used the growing distance to frame the scene more deliberately, allowing the scale of the ridge and the relationship between the hikers and the landscape to emerge in a quieter, more balanced composition.

What began as a simple pause on the trail became one of the defining images of the expedition.
