A solitary boat crosses the waters of Lake Tagua Tagua beneath the steep mountains of northern Patagonia. Presented in monochrome, the landscape is reduced to its essential elements of water, sky, mountains, and movement, creating a photograph defined by scale, atmosphere, and connection.
Photographed by Santiago Canales in February 2023 while waiting for the crossing after a multi-day trek from Cochamó to Puelo, this image captures a scene that remains part of everyday life in the interior valleys of the Reloncaví region. From the eastern shore of the lake, remote communities depend on this boat to reach the western side, where routes continue toward Puelo and the Carretera Austral. In a landscape shaped by mountains, fjords, and waterways, the lake remains both barrier and road.
The small vessel becomes the focal point of the composition, emphasizing the relationship between people and geography. Surrounded by steep slopes and vast open water, it represents movement, communication, and connection within a remote territory where distances are measured differently. Presented in black and white, the photograph highlights texture, contrast, and atmosphere, transforming an everyday crossing into a study of place and scale.
