The mountains often feel most alive in moments of uncertainty.
Photographed in September 2019 while descending from the summit of Cerro Ramón toward El Manzano Valley in Cajón del Maipo, this image was captured during a demanding two-night traverse connecting Cerro Provincia and Cerro Ramón—one of the classic mountaineering routes overlooking Santiago.
At the time this photograph was taken, the route had disappeared beneath us.
Low clouds filled the valleys, visibility shifted constantly, and the terrain ahead led toward steep drainages of loose rock where navigation errors can quickly become serious. The lone figure moving along the ridge captures a moment suspended between caution and commitment.
Rather than focusing on the summit itself, the image reflects the journey home—the long descent through vast Andean landscapes after the most difficult decisions have already been made.
