Two mountaineers cross a rocky ridgeline high above Santiago as the final light of day settles across the valley below. Captured by Juan Pedro Astaburuaga, this photograph balances human presence, rugged terrain, and the immense scale of the Andes.
Photographed in 2019 during the classic traverse between Cerro Provincia and Cerro San Ramón, the image captures one of the final rocky sections before reaching the summit of Provincia. The route follows the ridgeline that separates the Santiago Valley from the high Andes, creating a landscape defined by contrast, elevation, and distance. Warm evening light transforms the terrain into layers of stone, shadow, and atmosphere.
Small figures move carefully through the landscape while the city basin stretches toward the horizon beneath the fading light. More than a summit photograph, the image reflects the experience of moving through the mountains at the end of a long day, suspended between effort and arrival, wilderness and city, daylight and evening.
