Last Light on Provincia | Framed Print

Photographed by Juan Pedro Astaburuaga in 2019, this image captures a defining moment along the classic traverse connecting Cerro Provincia and Cerro San Ramón, one of the most beloved multi-day routes among Santiago mountaineers.

The photograph shows climbers negotiating one of the rocky sections encountered just before reaching the summit of Cerro Provincia. Suspended between sky and stone, they move carefully along the ridge while the last light of day fades across the Santiago Valley below.

What makes this route unique is its position. Throughout the traverse, hikers travel along a ridgeline that separates two immense landscapes: the urban basin of Santiago on one side and the vast Andes on the other. Few places offer such a striking contrast between city and wilderness.

Here, the mountains become silhouettes against a glowing horizon. The climbers appear small, almost incidental, within a landscape shaped by distance, elevation, and light. The image captures not only a mountain route, but the feeling of being suspended between day and night, effort and arrival.
