Soft morning light settles over Laguna Cayetué while the distinctive summit of Volcán Puntiagudo emerges in the distance.

Captured by Santiago Canales at the end of the historic Vuriloche Pass route, this photograph reflects one of Patagonia’s most remote and authentic border crossings. Open only during the summer months, the trail connects Argentina’s Nahuel Huapi National Park with Chile’s Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, traversing ancient forests, rivers, volcanic landscapes, and isolated settler territory.

Seen from the shores of Laguna Cayetué, the sharply pointed volcano that gives Puntiagudo its name rises beyond layers of forest and still water in the quiet light of morning. The Reloncaví region lies farther west beyond these landscapes, while the image itself remains rooted in the calm atmosphere of the lake and surrounding wilderness.

The photograph captures the stillness that often follows a long expedition: calm water, dark forest, and a distant volcanic summit illuminated by the first light of day.
