A landscape defined by movement, exposure, and scale.

Captured by Santiago Canales during the classic traverse connecting Cerro Provincia and Cerro San Ramón, this photograph documents one of the most iconic mountaineering routes above Santiago. Usually completed over two nights, the journey follows the high ridgeline that separates the city from the deeper Andes, linking two of the most recognizable peaks in the mountains closest to the capital.

The image distills the experience into its simplest elements: rock, sky, and a solitary figure advancing across the ridge. The mountaineer appears small against the terrain, emphasizing the relationship between human effort and the vastness of the landscape.

Along this traverse, hikers move between two worlds. To one side lies the entire Santiago Valley. To the other, the endless succession of Andean peaks stretching toward the horizon. Few routes so close to a major city offer such a complete sense of immersion in the mountains.

Presented in black and white, the photograph becomes less about location and more about the timeless act of moving through wild terrain. Texture, contrast, and negative space take center stage, creating a composition that feels both contemporary and enduring.
