Tronador | Framed Print

A mountain shaped by ice, weather, and time. Rising along the border between Chile and Argentina, Volcán Tronador dominates the northern Patagonian Andes with immense hanging glaciers that descend from its volcanic slopes. Presented in monochrome, the landscape is reduced to its essential forms: snow, rock, shadow, and scale.

Photographed by Santiago Canales in 2024 at the beginning of the Vuriloche Pass on the Argentine side of the range, this image captures one of Patagonia’s most distinctive mountains. Tronador takes its name from the thunder-like sound produced by frequent glacier collapses, a presence that can often be heard echoing across the surrounding valleys. The mountain's glaciated faces and dark volcanic terrain create a landscape that feels both monumental and alive.

The photograph was made near the start of a historic crossing route linking Argentina and Chile through the Andes. Open only during the summer months and accessible on foot or horseback, the Vuriloche Pass connects the forests, rivers, and mountain landscapes of Nahuel Huapi National Park and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. In black and white, the image emphasizes texture and geological form, transforming the mountain into a quiet study of contrast, permanence, and natural scale.
