Ice hangs from every flank of the mountain.
Photographed in 2024 by Santiago Canales at the start of the Vuriloche Pass, this black-and-white image focuses on the monumental presence of Volcán Tronador, one of the most distinctive peaks of the northern Patagonian Andes.
Named for the thunder-like sounds produced by its active glaciers, Tronador rises directly on the border between Chile and Argentina. The mountain dominates the landscape with vast hanging glaciers, dark volcanic rock, and an ever-changing surface shaped by ice and weather.
The photograph was taken from the Argentine side of the range, near the beginning of the historic Vuriloche crossing, a remote border route that can only be completed on foot or horseback during the summer months. The trail links two protected wilderness areas: Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park in Chile.
