The first light of day spreads across the forests and mountains of Paso Vuriloche, transforming the landscape into layers of mist, shadow, and muted sepia tones. Soft silhouettes emerge from the darkness while distant ridgelines fade into the horizon, creating an image defined by atmosphere, depth, and quiet mystery.

Photographed by Santiago Canales in February 2024 at dawn near the beginning of the Vuriloche crossing, this image captures a fleeting moment between night and day in one of Patagonia’s most remote border landscapes. The route connects Chile and Argentina through dense temperate forests, rivers, and mountain valleys, remaining accessible only on foot or horseback during the summer months. Historically associated with routes used across the Andes, Vuriloche continues to offer a rare experience of wilderness and distance.

Rather than focusing on a destination, the photograph explores the atmosphere of early morning in the mountains. The subdued colors of dawn soften the landscape and dissolve its boundaries, creating a contemplative scene where forest, mist, and mountain terrain become part of a single, immersive horizon.
